Running or trailrun shoes

The most noticeable difference between running shoes and trail running shoes is the sole. A street running shoe often has a rather smooth sole to prevent too much friction with the ground, while a trail running shoe has a lot of profile in the sole to get grip on the ground that can be muddy, slippery or uneven. The upper of a trail running shoe is often firmer to provide more lateral stability. Trail running shoes can also have highly water-repellent and even waterproof uppers. Both trail and running shoes models differ in their cushioning. There are models with light cushioning (often the competition-style models) and models with a lot of cushioning, often referred to as "ultra" in trail running shoes.
